Catalina Cortes

B I O

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Catalina Cortés grew up between Colombia, the United States and Mexico. She studied architecture at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City before turning to textile and mixed-media art. She also works as an interior designer, which informs how she thinks about scale, space and how a piece lives within a home.

Her training as an architect shapes her work: structure, rhythm and repetition guide pieces built from hand-dyed fabric and layered materials. Now based in Miami, she works between Miami and Mexico City, creating original series as well as custom commissions for private homes.

S T A T E M E N T

My work begins where order meets the edge of control. Trained as an architect, I think in grids, in rhythm, repetition, and structure. But within that discipline lives another layer: deeply sensitive, creative, and searching for a space to be imperfect without being judged.

I work with thread, wood, linen, and increasingly with watercolor and dye , materials that hold tension and softness at once. Each piece is built through repetition: small gestures, accumulated with patience, where what appears precise from a distance reveals traces of the hand up close. Those small imperfections are not mistakes. They are the most honest part.

I make art because it is how I know myself. Through the process of creating, I see my capacities, release what no longer serves me, and find , in each small square completed , a quiet victory. These threads have held a great deal: fear, anxiety, but also hope. I believe objects carry energy, and that this energy can inhabit the spaces of others.

My work speaks to those who appreciate detail and intention , people who don't need things to shout to be seen. I seek that precise balance: enough to invite curiosity, never so much as to overwhelm.
